The biggest moment of the night was the on-air wedding of 33 couples — gay, straight, old, young, of many races and many colors. The ceremony was part of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s performance of their song “Same Love,” which became a marriage-equality anthem last year. After Queen Latifah married the couples Madonna appeared on stage and sang "Open Your Heart" and weaved her song back into the end of "Same Love." I saw many tears in the audience as Madonna and Mary Lambert sang the end of the song "...not crying on Sundays....not crying on Sundays...not crying on Sundays." I started snapping a few photos of my TV:

Yes, it was incredibly moving. I got tears in my eyes too. Fortunately, we taped it and I watched it a couple of more times. Keith Urban had tears in his eyes - so sweet!
ReplyDeleteAnd being the Beatle expert that I am, I could read between the lines in some of the body language of them, their spouses, Yoko, and Sean Lennon. And the girl on stage that said Yoko was the wife of John Legend??? Oh my. But she did correct herself and Yoko was gracious about it. My favorite part was seeing Sean Lennon sitting by him mother (Yoko) - oh my, he looks sooooo much like his dad, John Lennon. Sean was born on his Dad's 35th birthday. And Sean must be 38 now which is so hard to believe. . . . . But back to the weddings - it was beautiful. What a great idea and symbol.
