The Help

My mother is very well read. I love that she loves to read. Growing-up, my mother always read to me, my brother, and my father during family road trips and before bed time. I enjoy books, but I don't like to read any more words than are required. Anytime my mom tells me that I have to read a book I know it means that I must, after all, half the fun of reading is talking about what you've read.

The Help is her current recommendation. I found the audio book on iTunes and discovered that one of my favorite actors, Octavia Spencer, is the voice of Minny on the audio book. I've been listening to it on my iPhone since our Memorial Day weekend travels. I'm on the last fourth of the book, but I couldn't wait to finish the book before I recommended that you go and get this book. It's such a great story. I cannot wait to discuss it live with my mom.

  1. I'm so glad you read this Patrick. It's one of the best books I've read in several years. I love any book that teaches you something you need to know, takes you to a place you have never been, has an author who takes care to create meaningful, memorable characters, and on top of all that, is a page turner.

The Help (I can't make that go to italics) was the first book that I had on my Kindle, and after finishing it, bought the real book so that I will have it in my library.

Next recommendation - The Last Child by John Hart - very, very good. It has one of those endings that completes a circle - read it and you'll know what I mean. Warning - be prepared to have your heart strings pulled.

  3. Patrick, after you read sparkerr's recommendation, then I want to make one as well.
Next recommendation - Touch and Feel WILD ANIMALS by DK Books - very, very good. It has one of those endings that makes you realize "I just touched a frog's skin and a lion's mane" - read it and you'll know what I mean. Warning - be prepared to read it every day until you get tired of it.

  4. That's pretty funny, Stephen. It must be Presley's favorite book - for the time being.
